‘Ismet’ Ulam Rajaaa

The first time I came across the ‘ulam raja’ term was in P. Ramlee classic Tiga Abdul– the one with Abdul Wahab, Abdul Wahib and Abdul Wahub and a character there called Ismet Ulam Rajaaaa..Back then as a kid I never knew ulam raja is a type of vegetable you can eat with sambal belacan and boiled rice.

Then after knowing the existence of Nasi Kerabu here, I orientated myself with the different kinds of ulam and ulam raja is one of them. We planted one in our garden and the husband has since acquired the habit of plucking the leaves, wash it under the garden tap and munch on them on the way out to campus. From Wikipedia BM, I learnt that ulam raja–

I have not acquired the taste for eating it raw just like that. But I love its flowers. They are very pretty. And it looks like a crown…
