Dr A is a scholar in his own right, for many years I’ve had the opportunity of listening to his lectures and attend his courses back in my hometown. Now that that I am on the same land as him, I savour every meeting with him, not unlike Tuesdays With Morries. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to work directly under him as his freelance executive editor. I must say that the financial renumeration pales in comparison to the lessons and wisdom I’ve gained from him.
One of the things he taught us was that every person that comes into our lives is like our mirror.
If someone does something good to us, chances are we have done some good deed one time or another to others. Or if we see some good characters in others, we actually posses those qualities within ourselves. Likewise, any bad attitudes or bad deeds that others imposed upon us is HIS way of telling us, look.. you have it in you too.
This lesson stuck onto me like a leech. Although it did not turn me into a neo Mother Theresa ( patience and more patience with anything and everything people throw upon you syndrome), it did always make my anger/annoyance come into a splitting halt momentarily each time I cross path with an obnoxious character– asking myself, is he/she my mirror?
Somehow, it has taught me to be less vindictive and to just let go. After all, each good deed/character will be rewarded and the bad/nasty ones will be dealt with, not by anyone else but the one up there. Cliche as it may sound, life is indeed too short to be spent carrying unnecessary baggages. And faith teaches us to forgive.
This mirror concept, I find is a good check and balance tool. The good from others may reflect the good in us, so use it as a positive reinforcement to do more good and receive back more goodness, making the world a bit brighter. The bad from others, use it as a reminder to check ourselves– is that us we are looking at? Then rectify or be forgiving, as don’t we want people to forgive us as well?

Mirror mirror on the wall… What does HE wants to show in us all ?

Great entry this one! I came across this concept not too long ago too. But I have to admit, it’s pretty difficult to be consistent in practising it though :(.
